ChatGPT Just Recommended Your Competitor. Here’s Why.

What SEO, AEO, and GEO actually mean for your business and what to do about it

There’s a shift happening in how people find businesses online, and most business owners have no idea it’s affecting them until it’s too late. That shift comes down to AEO vs SEO, and most business owners haven’t caught up to it yet. Ask Siri a question. Type something into Google and get a direct answer without clicking a single link. Ask ChatGPT for a recommendation and get a business name instead of a list of ten websites to sift through. If any of that sounds familiar, you’ve already experienced it firsthand; you just might not have had a name for it.

Here’s the uncomfortable part: somewhere out there right now, an AI tool is already answering questions about your industry. The only question is whether it’s mentioning your business, or quietly handing the referral to the competitor down the street who did their homework first. Search behavior has changed. Is your business keeping up?

That’s where three terms come in: SEO, AEO, and GEO. You’ve probably heard of one, maybe two. By the end of this blog, you’ll understand what each one means, why they’re different, and why none of it is as new or as scary as it sounds.

SEO: The Digital Storefront You’ve Heard About

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. In plain terms, it’s the process of making your website easier for Google (and other search engines) to find, understand, and recommend to people who are looking for what you offer.

Think of Google like a giant library. SEO is how you make sure your business’s “book” gets shelved in the right section and ends up at the front of the shelf when someone comes looking.

When someone Googles “best HVAC company in Milwaukee” or “how to choose a marketing agency in Milwaukee,” SEO is what determines whether your business shows up on the first page of results or gets buried on page four (where, let’s be honest, nobody goes).

Good SEO comes down to five core tactics.

1. Valuable content. Publishing helpful blogs, FAQs, service pages, and resources in a manner your customers actually search, so there’s something worth finding in the first place.

2. Technical accessibility. Making sure your site loads fast, works well on mobile, and is technically sound enough for search engines to crawl and index without hitting roadblocks.

3. Clear page optimization. Using the right keywords, titles, headers, and meta descriptions so search engines and readers both understand what a page is about, and who it’s for.

4. Credible authority. Building trust signals like a complete Google Business Profile, high-quality links from reputable sites, team bios, and genuine customer reviews that tell search engines (and people) you’re the real deal.

5. Strong user experience. Design a site that’s easy to navigate and genuinely helpful to visit, because search engines increasingly reward sites people actually enjoy using.

SEO has been the gold standard for online visibility for 20+ years. It’s still critical. It’s just no longer the whole picture.

AEO vs SEO isn’t really a competition. AEO and GEO are SEO’s existing principles, applied to a new delivery surface, an answer instead of a link.

The fundamentals don’t change. The output format does.

How AEO and GEO Are Changing the Way People Get Answers

People aren’t just typing searches into Google anymore. They’re asking questions, out loud to Siri or Alexa, in full sentences to ChatGPT, Claude, or Google’s AI Overview. They want a direct answer, fast, without scrolling through ten websites to find it. Two acronyms have shown up to describe this, AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). You’ll see them used interchangeably, and in practice they overlap, but they’re not identical.

AEO is about being the direct answer. The featured snippet, the voice response, the box at the top of the page that answers a question before anyone clicks anything.

GEO is about being the trusted source an AI model pulls from and cites when it generates an answer from scratch, whether that’s ChatGPT recommending a product, Perplexity comparing local vendors, or Gemini summarizing a topic.

Think of it like being name-dropped at a networking event you weren’t even invited to. Someone else is doing the introducing, on your behalf, before you’ve said a word. That’s flattering, right up until you realize you have no control over what they say, or whether they mention you by name at all. A recent Semrush study ound 61.7% of AI citations link to a source’s content without ever naming the brand in the answer itself. Getting pulled from is only half the win. Getting credited is the other half, and it’s the part most businesses haven’t figured out yet.

If SEO helps you get found, AEO and GEO help you get chosen, as the answer, and as the source behind it.

AEO vs SEO vs. GEO: Same Goal, Different Game

All three are trying to do the same thing. Get your business in front of the right people at the right time. But the way they work, and what they reward, is different.

SEO’s goal is to rank high in search results. The format is links to your website. It rewards keyword-rich pages that earn a click.

AEO’s goal is to be the direct answer to a question. The format is snippets, voice answers, and featured answers. It rewards clear, concise Q&A content people never have to click through to.

GEO’s goal is to be the source an AI model cites or pulls from. The format is AI-generated summaries, chat responses, and recommendations. It rewards well-structured, authoritative content an AI model trusts enough to reference.

The biggest shift? SEO is about being visible. AEO and GEO are about being credible and authoritative enough to be cited.

Here’s a real-world example. A homeowner’s furnace stops working in January. They grab their phone and ask, “How do I know if I need a new furnace or just a repair?”

With good SEO, your HVAC company’s website might show up in the top results, and they click through to read your blog post.

With good AEO and GEO, Google or ChatGPT pulls a direct answer from your content and displays it right there on the screen, with your business name attached. That homeowner hasn’t visited your site yet, but they already think of you as the expert. When they’re ready to call someone, you’re the name they remember.

The same goes for a CPG brand. A shopper asks Alexa, “What’s a natural alternative to store-bought granola bars?” If your brand has invested in AEO and GEO, your product or content could be what gets recommended, before they ever set foot in the aisle.

That’s a real difference in how your business is perceived, and whether someone calls you or adds you to their cart.

Case in Point: Palo Popcorn

When we developed Palo Popcorn’s new website earlier this year, we made sure the basics were in place for how people actually find a snack brand today: a retailer locator with clear, accurate information, blog content seeded from day one to build organic search presence, brand information kept consistent everywhere it shows up online, and analytics wired up to track whether any of it worked. None of it is exotic. It is SEO and AEO/GEO fundamentals, applied on a real Wisconsin popcorn brand, not a hypothetical.

How to Start Optimizing for All Three

None of this requires reinventing your marketing. Here’s where to start:

None of this is new. It’s the same fundamentals good marketers have used for years, just applied to a new format, an answer instead of a link.

Why This Matters for Your Business Right Now

Here’s the honest answer. If you’re not paying attention to this, you’re likely invisible to a growing number of potential customers, and you may not even know it.

Search behavior is changing fast. More than half of all Google searches, 58.5% in the U.S. according to Semrush’s 2025 study, now end without a click because people get their answer right on the results page and move on. Voice search and AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity are becoming how people find recommendations, compare services, and make buying decisions.

If your business isn’t optimized to show up in that new landscape, a competitor who is will get that customer instead. For small and mid-sized businesses, especially those in service industries, this isn’t just a “digital marketing” conversation. It’s a revenue conversation. The businesses that start building authority and credibility online now will have a real competitive edge in the next two to three years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

AEO is the practice of structuring content so it can be pulled directly into a featured snippet, voice response, or AI-generated answer, the box at the top of the page that answers a question before anyone clicks a link.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO is the practice of building the kind of authoritative, well-structured content that AI models like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini trust enough to cite or pull from when generating an answer from scratch.

AEO vs SEO: is one replacing the other?

No. AEO and GEO are built on the same fundamentals as SEO, they’re just applied to a new delivery surface, an answer instead of a link. A strong SEO foundation is still the base everything else stands on.

Do I need to choose between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

No. All three work toward the same goal, getting your business in front of the right people, they just reward different formats: SEO rewards keyword-rich pages that earn a click, AEO rewards concise Q&A content, and GEO rewards authoritative content AI models trust enough to reference.

How do I get my business cited by AI tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Keep your business information accurate and consistent everywhere it appears, write content in a clear question-and-answer format, lead with the answer instead of burying it, and build genuine authority through credible reviews, links, and expertise.

What is zero-click search, and why does it matter?

Zero-click search is when someone gets their answer directly on the search results page and never clicks through to a website. It now accounts for more than half of all Google searches in the U.S., which means visibility increasingly depends on being the answer, not just being a link in the results.
